57 year old Steven Pickering was arrested last Wednesday.
The 57 year old Saanich man facing arson charges in connection with a massive fire that destroyed a Cedar Hill Road townhouse complex appeared in court via video link today.
Steve Pickering is charged with intentionally and recklessly causing damage by fire or explosion.
The charges are related to two fires, the massive townhouse fire May 22nd, and inside the Shelbourne Street Home Depot April 9th,.
It’s alleged that Pickering knew townhouses were occupied.
The damage from both fires is estimated between seven and ten million dollars.
His lawyer, Kirk Karaszkiewicz says police arrested his client Wednesday after he turned himself in.
“I wouldn’t think there is any admission of guilt.
Clearly, theoretically, if you are aware that the police want to talk to you, you might very well come in and talk with them.
That doesn’t mean you are guilty.
And he was and is certainly entitled to the notion of innocence at this point in time.”
Pickering’s next court appearance is a bail hearing July fourth.
