WATCH: Royal Oak Middle School in Saanich marks major milestone with community open house
A Greater Victoria school is celebrating a big anniversary this weekend.
Royal Oak Middle School in Saanich is marking 150 years.
The school held a community open house on Saturday afternoon to celebrate the major milestone.
The original school house, which has long since been replaced, was built back in 1865.
For a long time, Royal Oak was the only high school for Saanich and the Peninsula.
The school has seen many different buildings over the years — the current school is the fifth school to be built — and the community is coming together this weekend to remember and celebrate the school’s rich history.
“One of the things that I’ve learned is that people don’t often leave this community so many people that went to school here stayed here, they raised their families here,” says Royal Oak Middle School principal Carly Hunter. “So you have great-grandparents, grandparents, grandchildren and children all part of this community and all being able to share their stories of their time here and that makes it special deep sense of community.”
Celebrations included burying a time capsule, which will be opened on the school’s 200th anniversary in 2065.
