WATCH: Prince William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, are coming to Victoria on a royal tour in September and as Tess van Straaten tells us, excitement is already building.
Victoria is considered the British capital of Canada — complete with carriages fit for a princess, high tea and double decker buses — and now it will play host to Britain’s most famous family.
Prince William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, will kick of their Canadian Tour in the B.C. Capital and pass through Victoria four times as they visit Vancouver, Kelowna, Bella Bella, Haida Gwaii and the Yukon.
“That is great, that is great news, yes, very exciting,” one tourist told CHEK News after the details were released Monday morning.
“I think it’s wonderful,” added a Victoria resident. “I’m a big fan of the monarchy and I think having the royal couple here is a wonderful tribute to Victoria.”
The tour will shine the spotlight on Victoria and Tourism Victoria says it’s a huge opportunity.
“Having the media spotlight here in this beautiful scenery will be wonderful for us,” Tourism Victoria CEO Paul Nursey says. “It’s the type of exposure we can’t buy on our own.”
Plans are already in the works for several royal-inspired marketing initiatives to capitalize on the royal fever.
“We’re really excited because Will and Kate and their family are really glamorous and Great Britain and Australia and other commonwealth countries are really great source markets for Victoria so we’re going to have some fun with it,” Nursey says.
The Royals will arrive September 24th, with an official welcome attended by the prime minister and tour operators couldn’t be happier.
“I think it’s pretty good for Victoria, definitely some royalty here with our roots and stuff and it will be good for the economy and all the people of Victoria,” Nolan Bruce of CVS Sightseeing says.
It’s expected the royals will stay at Government House, which is considered the Queen’s ‘home away from home’ and has played host to other royal tours.
But so far, few details are being released about the visit or events planned for the Duke and Duchess.
Prince George and Princess Charlotte expected to accompany parents on royal tour
The couple’s children, three-year-old Prince George and and one-year-old Charlotte, are expected to accompany them on this second Canadian trip and first official trip to B.C.
“Often these overseas tours are a real opportunity for royal children to have public engagement in a more relaxed environment,” explain historian Carolyn Harris, who writes about the monarchy.
The Department of Canadian Heritage is arranging the visit and says a big part of the tour will involve indigenous culture and the unique beauty of Canada’s West Coast.
