WATCH: Report says 34-year-old Kelly Ellard, serving a life sentence for the murder of Reena Virk, is eight months pregnant. April Lawrence reports.
It’s been 19 years since she murdered 14-year-old Reena Virk under the Craigflower bridge.
But Kelly Ellard is back in the headlines, with a report from the Vancouver Sun that the convicted killer is eight months pregnant.
While Corrections Canada won’t confirm the pregnancy, the report says Ellard got pregnant during a conjugal visit with her boyfriend, 41-year-old Darwin Dorozan, who was on day parole at the time.
CHEK News spoke with Reena Virk’s mother, Suman Virk, who said she’s not surprised by anything involving Kelly Ellard any more.
She went on to say she feels sorry for the baby that will have to be born into the prison environment.
Corrections Canada allows private family visits for eligible federal inmates every two months — and the visits can last up to 72 hours.
Victoria-based criminal lawyer Michael Mulligan says it’s part of rehabilitating prisoners so they can some day return to society.
“You don’t want the person who’s living in a concrete cell with no human contact being released and immediately moving in as your neighbour,” Mulligan said.
“We’re all much better off and safer if people are re-integrated in a measured way and are treated humanely,” he said.
Once a baby is born to a prisoner, it can stay with them, through a controversial program Mulligan says has been proven in a provincial court case to be beneficial to inmates.
“There were lower rates of recidivism for women who were allowed to stay with their babies when they were born,” he said.
And he says it’s also in the best interest of the child.
“Being breastfed in the early months of life, having a bond with somebody’s mother, and if you deny very young children those important early supports, it’s not in the child’s best interest,” said Mulligan.
Ellard’s first application for day-parole was denied earlier this year, and she won’t be able to try again for two years.
The baby’s father is also reportedly back in jail, so there’s no word on what will happen with their baby once it’s born.
