WATCH: The Red Cross is asking for donations because the recovery for Fort McMurray could take years
Many people are calling the local Red Cross in Victoria to donate and find ways to help.
Nearly 80,000 people were forced to leave their homes due to the Fort McMurray wildfire.
“We’re already active, so we’re supporting the shelter operation in Edmonton in coordination and in support of the government there and there’s needs already, very clear needs for the evacuation and certainly any support is appreciated,” said Canadian Red Cross vice president Kimberley Nemrava.
The Red Cross’ plan is to stay in Alberta for the long haul in hopes of rebuilding the community.
You can also donate by texting “REDCROSS” to 30333, phone: 1-800-418-1111 or online.
The Red Cross has also opened a toll-free line for residents to register at: 1-888-350-6070 or online at http://redcross.ca/registration.
