Police in Comox are looking for clues in the death of a man whose body was found offshore near St. Joseph’s Hospital on Tuesday.

The body was discovered in the Comox Harbour at around 3:45 p.m.

The Comox Fire Department responded to a medical call near the marina when it received a call from Comox Valley RCMP.

“They gave us a call requesting help with our fireboat so we were able to get a couple of RCMP members with us and the BC Ambulance crew and take them out in our 26-foot boat and recovered a victim in about 3 feet of water,” said Comox fire chief Gord Schreiner.

A kayaker had spotted a man’s body floating in the ocean near the former hospital site.

The deceased person was brought back to shore and handed over to RCMP.

Police have identified the victim and are now working with the BC Coroners Service to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death adding it’s too early to say if the death is suspicious.

“Anyone who drove, cycled, or walked in this area and saw something of interest, please give us a call to speak with investigators,” said spokesperson Const. Monika Terragni.

Anyone with information is asked to call Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 and refer to file number 2021-6590, or report information anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
