A harbour seal became a sudden stowaway on a small boat near Powell River today as it tried to escape a pod of killer whales.
The orcas had tossed the seal around a few times and taken it under water when it made a break for it and found refuge.
“He got close enough to see us and bee lined for the boat,” said Nick Templeman.
Templeman shot some incredible footage of the seal on the boat and a pod of up to a dozen orcas circling and approaching.
“For the better part of 30 minutes, the orcas took turns coming behind the boat and almost getting him a couple times,” he said.
Ultimately, the orcas swam away, and soon after once the coast was clear, so did the quick thinking seal.
“It was a crazy encounter, one we will not soon forget.”
