WATCH: Police are warning the public to be on the lookout for a man considered armed and dangerous after a double drive-by shooting in Sooke Tuesday night. April Lawrence reports.
Police across Vancouver Island are on the hunt for 25-year-old Joshua Nickolas Lafleur after a brazen drive-by shooting Tuesday night.
“It’s not a random event, it was a targeted shooting, by rival groups known to each other and known to police,” said Staff Sergeant Jeff McArthur.
It was Tuesday night just after 9:00 p.m. when Sooke RCMP were called to Ella Road for reports of shots fired.
They arrived to find two men, both from Sooke and both well-known to police, with gunshot wounds.
“One male was hit in the torso he remains in hospital, the other male was hit in the bicep, he’s been released,” said McArthur.
The man in hospital is in stable condition.
Residents in the normally quiet rural neighbourhood heard the shots ring out.
“At about 9:10 I heard some shots ba bang ba bang — it’s disturbing that it would happen here,” said a resident who didn’t want his named used.
It’s a no-through street better known for its wildlife, and it’s proximity to the ocean than for crime, and violence.
“This does not happen in Sooke, this is a random, isolated incident, in my lifetime I’m not aware of this occurring I don’t recall any type of news or anything of this nature happening in our community,” said Sooke Mayor Maja Tait.
And the mayor had a message for those involved.
“You’re not welcome here, this type of behaviour this type of activity is not welcome in Sooke,” she said.
Police say the vehicle involved in the shooting was stolen.
It’s a 2003 grey KIA Magentis — it had Saskatchewan plates but police say they could have been switched out.
It’s believed there were three people in the car.
Investigators are still working to identify two of them, but say the public should be on the lookout for Joshua Lafleur, who has been on the Crime Stoppers most wanted list since 2014.
He’s 25-years-old, six feet tall, 190 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes, and he is considered armed and dangerous.
He’s from the Sooke area.
Anyone with information should contact Sooke RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
