Crews were hard at work Sunday on a new playground that’s being built in honour of a longtime resident at a Pacifica Housing complex in Saanich who passed away recently.
Staff from Pacifica Housing and friends of Bonnie Clark are building the new playground on Irma Street in Saanich.
Bonnie lived in the neighbourhood for six years when she died unexpectedly last fall.
Described by friends as a proud woman of Cree and Métis descent, she was an inspiration to many in the community.
Bonnie loved children, and when her closest friends were asked about establishing a gift in her memory, a new playground to replace a very tired one seemed like the perfect legacy. Thanks to a fundraising campaign and other donors, more playgrounds are in the works for other Pacifica complexes in Bonnie’s honour.
“A lot of the playgrounds within the Pacifica Family Housing units are really tired old structures,” said Pacifica Housing fund development manager Nikola Mende. “Obviously we started with this one, this is the most important one, this is where Bonnie had lived for long stretches in her life.”
So far, Pacificia has raised more than $10,000 towards Bonnie’s Legacy Fund.
