A group calling itself Islanders Unite has started a petition calling on BC Ferries to give Vancouver Island residents a 50% discount on ferry travel.
The petition posted on change.org says Island residents are held prisoner on their own island, that families have a hard time leaving for holidays or visiting family.
It calls on Islanders to let BC ferries know “that we are tired of being gouged.”
It had attracted more than 8000 signatures by Thursday evening.
BC Ferries responded by saying that 85% of its customers are from inside the province so it would be difficult to justify giving one segment a discount and not another.
The company also says tourism contributes greatly to the economy of Vancouver Island and offering island resident discounts would mean charging tourists more.
