Witnesses say elderly man was hit while standing on a sidewalk.
Police shut down the northbound lanes of one of Courtenay’s busiest roads, Cliff Avenue near 26th for three and a half hours Tuesday afternoon after a vehicle lost control hitting several cars and a pedestrian standing on the sidewalk.
“He was right before the lights here, like right on the sidewalk. She hit him on the sidewalk,” Mandy Johnson told CHEK News at the scene.
She was working in a nearby dive shop when she heard the crash.
Police received numerous 911 calls at 2 o’clock after a gold coloured pathfinder travelling northbound on Cliff Avenue went out of control hitting the man, then two cars near the intersection of 26th Street before careening into a parking lot hitting a white pickup truck which hit another truck parked beside it.
The owners of the pick up who are paramedics were inside a nearby business and headed to the crash scene to help the victim.
“Yeah they came out of the driver’s licence building and they went and helped the pedestrian she had hit down the street and they were giving him CPR and checking him over,” said Johnson.
Johnson came out of the dive shop to check on the driver of the SUV.
“She was concerned, she was like what happened? I said you had an accident and she’s like well I’m diabetic so I took her over to the shade and had her sit down and calm down,” she added.
Police officers were seen giving the woman a breathalyzer test.
Police are not saying if anyone was arrested or if charges have been laid.
