Man arrested after hitting police car, attempted car jacking and 8 hour standoff.
Heavily armed RCMP officers descended on a property in Coombs just after 10 o’clock Tuesday morning when a police dog tracked a suspect to a trailer as the man tried to evade police.
“And he’s barricaded himself into my girlfriend’s son’s mobile home and they’re trying to get him out” Diane Ward told CHEK News.
“He’s got the doors all barricaded, the police tried kicking it in but they can’t and he’s in the back room saying he’s got a hostage and he’s going to hurt her if they don’t back off and leave him alone” said Corinne Pitney who lives in the park.
Police were first called to the area to investigate reports of a suspicious vehicle just down the Alberni Highway near the Coombs Junction.
“The vehicle attempted to flee, hit a PC, a police car and another civilian car” said Island District RCMP Staff Sergeant Andrew Isles.
The man then fled on foot engaging in a few minutes of terror for local residents including one woman who spoke to CHEK News on the condition she would not be identified.
“Just got in my vehicle to go to Qualicum and all of a sudden this face was at my window, my driver’s window. Desperation, he had a bloody nose, he looked frantic and he wanted me to open the door desperately. Luckily I had locked my door and I quickly stuck it in reverse and got out of there” she said.
The man said he had a hostage but that turned out to be untrue, however people who live in the park say it could have been a hostage situation.
“We have a young girl who lives next door to the next trailer over and she was home by herself, her boyfriend’s at work. It could have been her trailer he went in and he would have a hostage” said Pitney.
Police spent the better part of the day keeping an eye on the trailer and gathering resources.
Then just before 6pm they fire two cans similar to tear gas into the trailer hoping to flush the suspect out.
“It was deployed into the trailer and as a result of that the individual surrendered to police without incident” said Isles.
An ambulance was brought in to check on the man’s condition.
He was fine and a few minutes later he was escorted to a waiting police vehicle.
The unidentified man was arrested and now faces a several possible charges.
