BC Ferries’ new cable ferry between Buckley Bay and Denman Island is stuck mid-channel after a mechanical failure.
The vessel has been dead in the water since shortly after 9 am.
25 passengers plus crew are on board.
Those passengers report seeing smoke and oil on deck after a hydraulic system malfunction.
The ship came to a stop five minutes into the ten-minute crossing.
The ferry will be towed back to Buckley Bay.
A water taxi is being arranged to take passengers to Denman.
The Baynes Sound Connector has been in service for about three months.
It is the first cable ferry introduced into the BC Ferries fleet and was expected to save $1.75 million per year through reduced crew, maintenance and fueling costs.
