There’s a growing push to allow urban farm animals in the Capital Region.
Saanich City Council is launching a pilot project for miniature goats, after a 12-year-old girl lobbied to have one as a backyard pet. And that decision is now inspiring a Fernwood girl to start her own petition — to allow backyard pigs in Victoria.
11-year-old Taylor Specht is going around her neighborhood, knocking on door after door to gather signatures to allow pet pigs.
Specht will need 200 to 400 signatures, including approval from all of her immediate neighbors.
Specht says the particular breed she’s seeking permission for, the kunekune, isn’t harmful and won’t make the community a pig sty.
Saanich’s Jillian McCue spent nearly three years getting her goats approved so Specht says she understands that it will take some time, but she’s hopeful Victoria will eventually approve her request.
