WATCH: A Langford neighbourhood was evacuated Tuesday afternoon after a significant gas leak put residents at risk
Due to the leak, RCMP officers were turning drivers and pedestrians away southbound in the 2900 block of Leigh Road and westbound on Dunford Avenue at Carlow Road.
Firefighters, BC Hydro, and Fortis Gas crews were all on scene.
15 homes and 10 people were evacuated, including a resident who was disabled.
BC Transit was dispatched to assist that person.
Construction crews digging in the area damaged a six inch gas line causing the leak.
“Sitting outside I could smell that terrible smell and I looked down the road and there was a big grey cloud of something coming up the other end of the road and there [were] fire trucks and police cars and other emergency vehicles heading down the road,” said one resident.
“In a situation like this, because it’s such a significant leak and the wind is kind of swirling around right now we’re concerned that if it finds an ignition source there could be some danger to the public,” said Langford Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Chris Aubry.
Fortis BC managed to control the leak by about 3:30 Tuesday afternoon.
There were no reported injuries.
