Federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair was on Vancouver Island today as part of his federal budget consultation tour.
His first stop was in Nanaimo this afternoon along with area MPs Sheila Malcolmson and Alistair McGregor.
Mulcair was there to hear from people about what they’d like to see in the 2016 budget the Liberal government will deliver later this month.
“We’re making sure that we get out and hear from as many people as possible about what their priorities are for the budget,” said Nanaimo-Ladysmith MP Sheila Malcolmson.
“When we heard Tom was going to be in British Colombia, we really encouraged him to come over to the Island.”
Mulcair then headed to Victoria for an event this evening where he appeared with MP’S Randall Garrison and Murray Rankin.
The tour comes ahead of the NDP convention in Edmonton in April.
Mulcair faces a leadership review after the party’s disappointing showing in the last election.
“Although I’m not taking anything for granted I am heartened by what I’m seeing across the country as support for what we did in the last campaign despite the problems that we’ve identified,” Mulcair said this evening.
Vancouver Island proved a rare bright spot in the October election as the NDP won 6 of 7 seats on the way to finishing a distant third with 44 seats overall.
