A manhunt in Nanaimo left neighbours on edge Friday after a distraught man with a gun was seen there.
RCMP patrolled roads for the 58 year old before the search zeroed in on a truck found at the end of Nanaimo Lakes Road.
As Nanaimo RCMP patrolled surrounding roads for an armed man and a police helicopter buzzed overhead Mike Gogo went to work in his office, warned the wanted man was likely very nearby.
“I was contacted by officers at the mill here that there was some man that was deranged,” says Gogo, the owner of Gogo’s Sawmill.
The 58 year old was spotted with a firearm Friday morning and described by police as distraught and at possible risk to himself. So immediately police fanned out to his known addresses. Warning the public to be on the lookout for a tan Dodge 3500 pick up.
“We trust them and we know that they know what they’re doing so that’s all that matters,” says Milllie Gogo.
“Yeah there’s four police cars down at the corner and there’s four more there I’ve never seen so many police cars in my life,” says Mike Gogo.
When the wanted man’s truck is spotted walking distance from Mike Gogo’s sawmill police stop traffic and locate the gun inside. Neighbouring residents looking on and wondering if the man has been tracked too.
“That’s kinda scary considering I spend six months of the year in the bush around the campground,” says Cheryl Wagstaff.
But within hours of the search starting the man is taken into custody in a south Nanaimo home, and taken to hospital for assessment. Resting heart rates that had been racing much of the day in a typically quiet south Nanaimo neighbourhood.
