Four people arrested on drug charges
The search of a Nanaimo home for illegal drugs came to an abrupt halt when police officers found an explosive device
The search was taking place here in this house on Machleary Street in South Nanaimo late yesterday afternoon after four
people were arrested on drug charges.
But when police entered the house they soon came across a grenade and quickly evacuated the building.
RCMP Constable Garry O’Brien says the Explosive Device Unit was called in from Vancouver today to assess the threat.
“They didn’t know if it was active or not so they did the right thing, they backed off, they secured the home, they removed
two people from adjacent units and they called our explosive device unit.
They’ve attended the the scene and determined it is inactive so our members have returned to the scene and they’re now
searching for the drugs and possible firearms in the home.
Police say a quantity of drugs was found, including cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine.
One person remains in custody and faces possible charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
