High demand for campsites and unreliable reservation system leaves many campers feeling frustrated.
Camping itself might be relaxing but for many people the simple act of reserving a spot is not.
Many campers at Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park who pulled into their sites on Friday shared stories of how difficult it is to get into Rathtrevor and many other parks.
“And we just made our reservation for next year yesterday,” said one man who was with a large group in a group site that can be booked one year in advance.
At the main gate a line up of camper trailers and other rv’s began around noon.
Rathtrevor is one of the hottest camping tickets in BC.
“Raththrevor Beach is typically our highest occupancy park and it is hard to get into. I mean the first day that reservations opened this year. It was up 18% from last year which was up from the years before that as well,” said Allison Roberts a park naturalist at Rathtrevor Beach.
Other campers arriving at the main campground were all too keen to share their battle stories of trying to reserve three months ago for the drive in sites.
“I’m waiting to pay for it, the system crashed on me and he had to come home so I could go to work so he stayed at home trying to get a reservation,” said Karen Gardner as she explained how she and her husband traded off being at work in order to secure a reservation.
Camping has become so popular and reservations so hard to get that scalping or reselling reserved campsites is known to be taking place.
“I’ve heard that people are buying and then standing outside and selling them off to people. I can’t imagine, there has to be something that has to change,” one camper told CHEK News.
“Well I mean yeah, some people are finding a market for it but it’s still not right, it’s like selling tickets for a hockey game or a concert,” commented another.
But officials say if you buy a reserved site of someone else you probably will not get in the park.
“Well we’ve definitely been made aware of it. It’s not acceptable and the reservation will probably be taken away without a refund,” said Roberts.
A reservation required specific information that has to be proven when checking in.
