A man was rescued from the water near East Sooke Regional Park after a hiker on shore heard his cries for help Tuesday morning.

The Sooke Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR) unit and a Canadian Coast Guard vessel went to the water near Beechy Head at 10:25 a.m. after a hiker reported hearing someone yelling “help” in the vicinity.

“With restricted visibility of less than 1/4nm, we knew the searching would be challenging,” the Sooke Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue unit wrote in a Facebook post.

Shortly after the search began, a nearby fishing boat saw a plume of smoke from a jet ski that had caught fire south of Beechy Head. The person on the boat found the jet ski rider and pulled him out of the water.

RCMSAR went to the fishing boat and brought the rescued man onto their own vessel. The man was treated for mild hypothermia and shock. The coast guard arrived at the RCMSAR vessel shortly after and a rescue specialist took over the man’s care.

The man was taken back to a public boat launch in Sooke. RCMSAR said he was wearing a wet suit and it is estimated that he was in the water for 40 minutes.
