71-year-old man was walking on a Courtenay sidewalk with his wife when he was hit.
“I heard a really loud crash and thud and someone screaming,” said Angie Schnepper, who was working nearby.
Witnesses to yesterday’s terrible scene on Cliffe Avenue in Courtenay are sharing their stories today.
Angie Schnepper was working at the Soup Pot right in front of where it happened.
“I saw a shoe and a pair of sunglasses clearly knowing that somebody had been hit,” Schnepper told CHEK NEWs.
She soon realized that the victim lay on the road about 50 metres away critically injured.
Ruby Orvis is visiting from Edmonton and had just pulled into a restaurant parking lot across the street.
“So I ran down there and it was obvious he had been hit by a car and my sister was already there and first-aid attendants and then a doctor stopped and helped us and we began CPR,” Orvis told CHEK News.
She says she was touched by the number of people who came out to help but in the end it was to no avail.
The 71-year-old man was later pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
Witnesses say he’d been walking along this sidewalk with his wife when he was hit by a gold Nissan Pathfinder.
“So I was trying to console her and stuff and talking to her and she was just like this praying and in Spanish and you know and she was talking about her grandchild that was coming in November and she was just, she was in shock,” said Schnepper.
After hitting the man the Pathfinder kept going striking two more vehicles at the next intersection at 26th St. before crashing into a nearby parking lot hitting two more vehicles.
That’s when Mandy Johnson came out of her business to check on the driver of the SUV.
She says when police arrived they performed a sobriety test on the woman.
“The police officer came up, I started walking away and he asked her if she’d had anything to drink and she said that she’d only had one drink, so, but she also said she was diabetic and her passenger said she had passed out at the whee,l” said Johnson.
No names have been released but police do say the 46-year-old driver of the SUV faces potential charges of impaired driving causing death.
