WATCH: A 7,200 square foot Rockland mansion is being sold through live auction. Monica Martinez has a live report.
Single family homes in Victoria are in hot demand, and now one couple is hoping to capitalize on that trend by selling their Rockland mansion in an unusual way.
A live auction in the ballroom of the 7,200 square foot home was held at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The house is listed at $1.98 million.
It is called Grierson Mansion after its first owner E.D. Grierson.
It was built in 1910 and designed by architect Samuel Maclure, who also designed Hatley Castle.
The 7,200 square foot home has six bedrooms, six bathrooms, a ballroom, a billiards and media room as well as a bar and 2,000 bottle wine cellar.
Selling a home by auction is unusual in Victoria, but the owners are from Australia, where house auctions are more common and so this was their idea.
Realtor Andy Stephenson said it’s a good trial run to see what the appetite here is for these type of sales.
“I’ve given the people here two weeks to do their due diligence, home inspections that kind of thing, then they stand in a room and they see this fellow’s paying this much and I’m paying this much and you know you have to be at that comfort level to what you ultimately want to pay,” said Stephenson.
Interested buyers have had a lot of opportunity to see the space.
There has been a daily open house for the past two weeks.
