WATCH: Man taken into custody after barricading himself in trailer during Coombs standoff

A 36-year-old man remains in custody after a tense police stand-off in Coombs on Tuesday.

Heavily armed RCMP officers surrounded a trailer near the Alberni Highway Tuesday morning.

The man allegedly broke into the trailer while attempting to escape from police after smashing his vehicle into a police cruiser and other cars.

He remained barricaded inside until Tuesday evening when police used something similar to tear gas to force him out.

A gun was found in the trailer and the man was taken into custody.

Fortunately, initial fears of a hostage taking turned out to be false and although neighbours were shaken, no one was hurt.

Police say the man is well-known to police and wanted on a number of outstanding warrants.

He’s expected to appear in court Thursday on a number of new charges including possession of a firearm, break and enter and flight from police.
