Vancouver Island-born and trained athletes are once again well represented in the Olympics.
UVIC Alum Richard Weinberger finished 17th in the 10K Open Water Marathon Swim Tuesday. The 26 year-old London 2012 Bronze Medalist said despite the disappointing finish, he’ll be back for Tokyo 2020.
Claremont Secondary Grad Fred Winters and his Canadian Men’s Volleyball Team were ousted by #3 ranked Russia earlier today. Despite the quarterfinal loss, the #12 ranked Canadian team played the role of Cinderella — knocking off higher ranked U.S. and Italy in pool play. The result is impressive considering Canada hasn’t qualified for Olympic Men’s Volleyball since 1992.
Campbell River-born Shawnee Harlee helped guide the Canadian Women’s Basketball team to a top 8 finish. Canada fell 68-63 to the higher ranked France in the quarterfinal Tuesday. Harlee was the team’s assistant coach.
