Earth Day events continued today on Vancouver Island.
And one Victoria shopping centre is doing its part to try and reduce the use of plastic bags.
Volunteers from the World Fisheries Trust were on hand at Hillside Centre today to show kids just how damaging plastic can be on our marine environment.
The plastic can harm and kill marine life.
Plastic water bottles and plastic bags are among the worst culprits.
And that’s why Hillside Centre launched a new campaign today to get people to stop using plastic bags.
“Plastic bags have become a huge problem in the environment and being ocean stewards that we are with the ocean wall,” said Michelle Paget of Hillside Centre, “we decided to tie into our electronics recycling program plastic bags as well.”
In addition to recycling bags, Hillside Centre will give you a cotton tote you can re-use every time you shop, in exchange for a single-use plastic bag.
The program is set to run for the rest of the year and longer, if needed.
