Greater Victoria couple lose appeal court decision on Metis foster child
BC’s appeal court has dismissed two appeals by a Greater Victoria couple fighting to adopt a Metis foster child they have raised since birth.
The Ministry of Children and Family Development wants to send the toddler to Ontario to live with her two biological siblings and their adoptive parents.
The adoptive parents are not indigenous.
The foster mother is Metis.
She argued the importance of the girl’s aboriginal heritage should outweigh the importance of blood relatives.
But the court rejected those appeals, ruling the ministry has the authority to determine their best interests
