WATCH: Mayfair shopping centre was evacuated this afternoon after a suspected arson in one of its largest stores
Victoria fire crews were called to the Toys R Us store just after 2:00 pm this afternoon after flames were reported in a toy aisle.
“We saw smoke from the back of the store, my daughter came and said that a stuffed animal was on fire,” said a shopper.
Shoppers were rushed outside as smoke filled the store.
Crews arrived quickly but staff had used a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze which had started in a display of stuffed animals.
Crews say the extent of the damage is unclear, but at least one rack of merchandise was destroyed.
“I said to my sister that I smelt smoke, and she did too, and then my niece said that she was in the stuffed animal department when she saw flames and smoke and that we needed to leave,” said another Toys R Us customer.
“There has been other fires at other stores so the investigation is prudent, because the Home Depot fire was determined to be an arson so it could be someone going around lighting store merchandise on fire,” said Capt. Micheal Schrank, Victoria Fire.
Two weeks ago a fire was intentionally set in a Saanich Home Depot at University Heights mall.
Crews had to evacuate the mall and close surrounding roads.
Fire crews are still investigating the cause of the Toys R Us fire, but say they believe it is suspicious.
