As many as 300 people will form a motorcade cruise Saturday in honour of 20 year old Chemainus man Derek Descoteau, who was murdered outside his Chemainus home in May.
Friends and family are gathering this weekend because the popular young man would have turned 21 Sunday and they hope it will celebrate his life and offer closure to many still grieving his tragic death.
What Taygen Butler could use more than anything right now is his best friend Derek Descoteau to figure out what’s wrong under his car’s hood.
“I just see having problems,” says Butler.
Getting his car ready for the Saturday cruise in honour of his murdered friend is something Butler’s now trying to figure out without him.
“There’s nothing you can really do about it other than really celebrate his memory and just really live your life for him. Cuz he was a really happy kid too,” says Butler.
The popular young man’s tragic killing on May 20th is still a source of shock in the tight knit communities of Chemainus and Duncan. Places Descoteau called home.
“Like he knew everyone it’s really, it really kind of amazed me how big of a reaction the town got,” says Butler.
The 20 year old was stabbed to death outside his father’s Chemainus home on May 20th. A 16 year old girl he was talking with was also badly injured. A neighbour of Descoteau’s who was known known for mental health issues has been charged with their attack. So on this weekend that Derek Descoteau would have turned 21, his friends and family are going to form a motorcade winding from Duncan through to Sooke, and celebrate the life of the car buff, whose life was so violently taken from all of them on May 20th.
“I think it’s just going to help some people get some closure,” says Descoteau’s friend Otis Downey. “It’s just a nice way of saying goodbye kind of I guess.”
And after trying and then trying again like Derek Descoteau would have said, Taygen Butler turns his ignition one more time. Smiling as he hears the engine come to life, so he too can hit the open road on Saturday and remember his friend.
