There were some tense moments for residents of the Beacon Hill Villa in James Bay this evening.
Victoria Fire Department crews were dispatched to the 80-unit complex care facility on Superior Street at around 5:30 p.m. after fire alarms went off.
They couldn’t find any sign of a fire when they arrived at the seniors home but some residents said they’d smelled smoke.
“We cut some holes in the walls and tried to find any trace of smoke,” said Battalion Chief Bob Jones.
“There were roofers working here earlier and that is always a cause for concern.”
Given the number of elderly and vulnerable residents, firefighters carried out an extensive search before they gave the all-clear.
“Using our thermal imaging camera, we weren’t been able to find any heat or any signs of any fire at all,” said Jones.
The facility did not have to be evacuated.
A stretch of Superior Street between Government and Douglas was shut while fire crews carried out their work.
