Staff say weekend fire destroyed a significant amount of wildlife habitat
Staff at Saanich’s Swan Lake nature sanctuary are assessing how to fix the damage done by brush fire over the weekend.
A fire Saturday afternoon burnt through about a hectare of grass and brush at the popular park.
Kathleen Burton with the Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary says while the fire destroyed a significant amount of wild life habitat it could have been much worse.
“It doesn’t take much.
Just the flick of a little ember to set something like this off.
We’re fortunate that it didn’t take off and that the Saanich Fire Department is just across the way.
They were here so fast and were here for hours watching hot spots any making sure and making sure it was controlled.
But its very scary but it could have been a lot worse.
It could have been really devastating.”
Three weeks ago a fire was deliberately set in the park.
So far the cause of this weekend’s has not been determined.
