WATCH: Fire crews in Courtenay rush to the scene of a bakery fire after flames broke out above an oven

Fire crews weren’t taking any chances Monday evening, after a blaze broke out at Courtenay bakery.

The fire at Grains Bakery on 10th Street began just before 7:30 pm.

Officials say the flames broke out in an area where the chimney goes through the roof.

Several employees were inside at the time and they initially tried to douse the flames but quickly evacuated the building.

Three fire trucks responded from the nearby fire hall and quickly got the situation under control.

“When we got here crews found smoke coming out of the roof,” says Courtenay Fire deputy chief Kurt MacDonland. “Fire was located above one of the commercial ovens and we managed to get the fire contained to the area with minimal damage to the building.”

No one was injured.

A damage estimate hasn’t yet been released and there’s no word on what sparked the bakery blaze.
