Canada’s health minister has invited the City of Victoria to apply for an exemption from the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, in order to open a supervised consumption site.
Victoria council has made establishing a safe consumption site part of this year’s strategic plan. To that end, Mayor Lisa Helps wrote to health minister Jane Philpott earlier in February.
In a response letter now available on the city’s website, Philpott says government officials are available to provide guidance on the application process.
“[W]hen properly established and managed, supervised consumption sites can save lives and improve health without increasing drug use and crime in the surrounding area,” she writes.
