Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton are set to visit BC, and many in Victoria are excited of a potential visit from the Royal couple
For the first time in two years, royalty will visit British Columbia this fall.
Governor General David Johnston announced today Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton will make their second royal visit to Canada to BC and the Yukon.
Although their travel plans are not official yet, a potential visit to Vancouver Island is already drawing excitement.
“Their like royalty, it’s pretty legit, it’s pretty nice. Pretty cool,” says one Victoria resident
“I would love it, being a British girl, so for me, I would just love it,” added another
Vancouver Island has a long history of royal visits.
The last came in September of 2014 when Prince Edward, the Earl of Essex was joined by his wife Sophie Rhys-Jones.
A year earlier, the Duke of York, Prince Andrew, helped celebrate the Victoria Highland Games at the start of the Victoria Day long weekend.
Prince Charles, with his wife Camilla, made the Capital part of their travel plans in November 2009, marking the last time a future King and his Queen made a stop in the Capital.
Preparations are already underway by the Monarchists League of Canada for block parties and a garden tea party on August 6th.
“That will be a celebration now party in the fact that hopefully by that date we will be able to confirm some of the details, who is coming, where will they be going and are they coming to Victoria,” says Monique Goffinet Miller of the Victoria chapter of the Monarchists League of Canada.
Goffinet Miller says the pair’s popularity makes this visit to BC even more special.
“They’re on twitter, they’re on Face Book, so they can connect with people in a different way and I think that’s why we’re seeing more and more people connecting to them.”
And tourists to Victoria say they would make the effort to see the Royal couple if they arrived in the Capital.
“Pretty important people right now, they influence the country quite a bit,” said one man from Seattle.
Another visitor from the Sunshine Coast added, “well we always love coming to Victoria so it would be a good excuse I guess to come, although I don’t think we need one.”
Visits from the Royal Family have provided large crowds in Victoria.
Likely the same awaits the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
