Police say there are different ways to be distracted, other than by electronic devices
It’s not your typical reason behind a motor vehicle accident.
A driver choking on his breakfast lost control of his vehicle, jumped a median, hit another pick-up and wound up in a ditch.
It all took place this morning in front of Saanich’s Uptown Mall.
Mary Griffin reports.
Morning rush hour traffic slowed to a crawl near Saanich’s Uptown mall.
This video was taken just moments after a dramatic collision.
“Two minutes after eight we had a report of a two car collision involving a northbound pick-up truck.
This one you see over my shoulder, was northbound on Douglas, in front of Uptown.
It jumped the centre median, and hit a southbound pick-up truck.”
It took place at the pedestrian overpass at Uptown Mall.
Witnesses say the driver appeared to be unconsious as his pick-up jumped the concrete median,
struck the white pick-up, then slammed through the trees.
Winding up in the ditch.
“Our understanding from the driver is, he tells us that he had just had had a swig of his coffee.
We believe that he was either choking on the doughnut he was eating, or the hot coffee went too far down and closed off his airway.”
Police say eating and drinking while driving is just another form of distracted driving.
But drivers CHEK News spoke with are split on the issue.
“I just wait until I can get to work or home or something to eat or drink.”
“I actually get after my wife all the time because she makes a mess.
I never have any food.”
“Are you going to be drinking your coffee and driving?”
“Yes, I probably will.
But I’m just going up the road.
So, I’m going to try not to choke.”
“Do you drink coffee or hot beverages while you’re driving?”
“All the time.”
I also walk and chew gum at the same time.”
It an hour time to remove the damaged vehicles, and then traffic started moving again.
And both drivers escaped any injuries.
