WATCH: Greater Victoria School Board to re-evaluate dress codes that could ‘shame’ girls
It’s been a controversial issue but the Greater Victoria School Board is looking at a new approach to dress codes at schools.
There’s concern traditional dress codes shame girls, instead of teaching boys respect.
Right now, schools in Greater Victoria are able to develop their own dress codes.
They usually ban girls from wearing skimpy clothing.
But Trustee Jordan Watters says dress codes that prohibit distracting clothing send the wrong message.
Watters is bringing forward a motion on Monday, calling on School District 61 to make sure dress codes are in line with the District’s commitment to gender equality.
It’s not clear how that would translate into a policy regarding dress codes but Watters says the current policies are insulting to both girls and boys.
