WATCH: A log cabin north of Courtenay was completely destroyed early Monday by a massive and spectacular fire. Stacy Ross reports.
A log cabin on Sackville Road in Merville , 14 kilometres north of Courtenay, broke out in flames at 3 a.m. Monday.
Courtenay crews weren’t far away, they had just wrapped up a vehicle fire call in east Courtenay.
“It had already burned through the roof, parts of the roof blown out most of the windows, the wood deck was on fire just a large amount of fire,” said Courtenay Fire Deputy Chief Kurt MacDonald.
There are no hydrants in the area and the Oyster River Fire Department was called to help but there was nothing they could do to save the two storey home.
“We were pretty much there protecting exposures and making sure the fire didn’t spread,” said MacDonald.
The lone occupant of the cabin, a man and his dog, managed to escape without injury.
It took six hours to finally extinguish the flames.
The official cause of the blaze has not yet been determined but the are reports that it may have started in the kitchen area of the home.
The investigation continues no word yet on the cost of the damage.
