WATCH: Discovery Island Marine Park is being closed to visitors after a frightening encounter between a family and the island’s resident wolf last weekend
The Canadian Coast Guard says a family called to be rescued after finding themselves cornered near Sea Bird Point, away from the park portion of the Island.
But now the BC Conservation Officer Service says it has made the recommendation to close park access to protect both the public and the wolf.
Conservation officer Scott Norris says the wolf is showing signs of curiosity, but not aggression.
They want the park closed through the fall and winter while they conduct an assessment.
He says the intent is to “keep the wolf wild” by keeping humans away.
Stakeholders will be notified of the closure this week after which signage will be posted on the island and updated information will be posted on the BC Parks website.
