Death onboard Queen of Oak Bay ferry leads to sailing cancellations

The Queen of Oak Bay cancelled a round trip Monday morning after a death onboard the ferry.

According to Const. Gary O’Brien, spokesman for the Nanaimo RCMP, there was a sudden death on the ferry that arrived at Departure Bay at 8 a.m. The body of a man was found by BC Ferries employees on the Queen of Oak Bay after the ferry arrived in Nanaimo.

“The death is not considered to be suspicious in nature,” O’Brien said.

Both the RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service are investigating the death. O’Brien said as criminality is not suspect,  no further information will be released.

BC Ferries said out a service notice that the Queen of Oak Bay’s 8:30 a.m. sailing exiting Departure Bay and the 10:30 a.m. sailing leaving Horseshoe Bay had both been cancelled due to a medical emergency involving a customer.

Police have released the vessel back to BC Ferries and The Queen of Oak Bay will resume service for the 12:30 p.m. sailing.

Investigators were at Departure Bay on Nov. 27 after a sudden death onboard the Queen of Oak Bay.
