George Beiber recently pressed 148 lbs on a free weight bench which could be a world record.
You can tell right away George Bieber is comfortable around a weight machine and to see him bench press over 200 lbs you quickly realize he is not your average 97 year old man.
“Some days I can lift more than others. I like lifting weights” Beiber told CHEK News.
George says his passion for working out began when he was 20 years old in the Air Force.
“When my buddies went to lunch I went for a mile run or I looked for a place to do chin ups or push ups” he added.
He does it all at his home gym at the Comox Community Centre where earlier this week he was videotaped lifting 148 lbs on a free weight bench press.
The video is getting thousands of views on the Comox Recreation Facebook page and might just be a world record for a man just three years shy of turning 100 years old.
“A guy 91 years old from Victoria pressed 144 pounds, he was 91and they said that was a record in Canada and possibly a world record. Now I pressed 148 and I’m six years older” pointed out Beiber.
George has become very popular around the gym.
“I think it’s amazing. This guy right here shows that nobody has excuses if you want to work out and be healthy” said 28 year old Adam Laforge who was working out beside Beiber.
Yeah I think it’s really super cool and I always say hi to him, he’s pretty amazing” said Elsa Gilroy who was also working out at the Comox Community Centre.
“He is an inspiration. When we talk about health and fitness and then we look at George. This is what your senior years can be like” added Mandy John, Recreation Director for the Town of Comox.
George says just sitting at home wasn’t part of his retirement plans.
“Anybody can do it but just to retire and sit down with your feet up, anybody can do that but I don’t feel my age at the moment. I like coming here every day” he said.
