Crews were able to re-open Victoria’s Johnson Street Bridge hours earlier than expected Saturday, after work to install a pedestrian and cyclist overpass on the Vic West side of the bridge wrapped up ahead of schedule.
The Blue Bridge was closed to vehicle traffic at 6pm Friday and only people walking or cycling were able to cross the bridge.
Vehicles were blocked by a massive crane that took up the entire width of Esquimalt Road and diverted to the Bay Street Bridge. The closure was supposed to last for 24 hours, but everything went better than expected and the bridge was re-opened around 12:30 Saturday.
While the Johnson Street Bridge replacement project has been plagued by delays and massive cost over-runs, Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps says she hopes how smoothly things went on the pedestrian/cyclist link is a sign of good things to come.
