Incredible video captured by Kathryn and Joel Wynans
It really is the case of the one that got away.
A Comox Valley fisherman discovered that the jerk at the end of his line was not a fish, but competition.
Maple Lake near Cumberland is not the typical scene of highway robbery.
Joel Wynans says it was just an ordinary day on the lake earlier this month.
“We were just fishing, me and the wife.
Came out to the lake, it was a pretty nice day. ”
“It was over there.
No, it was over there.
I recognize the trees.”
Wynan and his wife, Kathryn, fish here often.
“He was just coming up behind me, behind the tree line.
Wife said, there he is!”
So what happened earlier this month, took them by surprise.
“And there’s an eagle that constantly comes down.
Dive-bombs us all the time.
He was dive bombing us pretty hard.
My wife was trying to get a picture.”
Kathryn couldn’t get a still shot.
Instead she caught this brazen theft on video.
“Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow!
“On one of his second or third swoops down, just timing was right, real, real, real.
Tried to let the fish dive, but I kind of lost sight of him.
Came in too fast, and wham!
Took the fish in between.”
Chance encounters like this are rare.
But when captured on video, they astound.
“Oh my god.
Oh my god!”
Cougar sighting are scarce, but running into three full-grown cats, unheard of.
“There’s the other one there.”
Adam Nash spent several minutes as the centre of attention for these curious cats.
A pod of transient orcas on the hunt, captured on video.
“Oh they are killing something.”
One of the orcas zeros in on the seal, flips its tail once, twice, three times.
“That seal went 80 feet into the air!”
On a calm afternoon, travel adventure guides Dag and Maria Goering, spotted a pod of orcas 50 metres away.
Suddenly, they discovered they were the focus of what turned out to be transient orcas.
“Hold on tight when they come.”
Just days earlier, two women kayaking east of Sidney Island found themselves surrounded by dozens of resident whales.
“Oh! There’s one coming right under our boat.
Oh my god.”
“That’s awesome, hey.
That same guy.”
The Wynans’ video is going viral.
Everyone wants to see it.
“I threw it on the Internet for fun.
Put in on Reddit and couple of other places, then just started having people hounding me, hounding me, hounding me, hounding me for it.”
But for this priceless video, it’s worth it.
