Remains found in bushy area near corner of Bowen Road and Rosstown Road.
Nanaimo RCMP spent several hours Monday investigating the discovery of human remains.
“About 9:30 this morning City of Nanaimo workers found what was believed to be human remains in the 2200 block of Bowen Road. We were notified, the BC Coroner’s service has been notified as well and they are currently en route” Nanaimo RCMP Constable Gary O’Brien told CHEK News at the scene.
The remains were found near the corner of Bowen Road and Rosstown Road.
Murray Dodds watched the scene unfold from a nearby church parking lot.
“The police arrived and immediately started taping the area off, running through the bushes and stuff like that. Kind of securing the area and my understanding was they had found some sort of a body back in there” said Dodds.
“Concerned” was how Karen Donner felt as she watched the police work near her house.
Her home backs on to a small creek that runs though this area where the body was found.
“Every now and then especially on hot days if the wind picks up a bit you do smell that odour of still water. I’m wondering how much of that might have been a decomposing body” Donner said in an interview with CHEK News.
Police at the scene were releasing very little about the remains.
“All we can say is that they are skeletal so it appears they have been there for some time” said O’Brien.
RCMP officers brought in a drone and flew it over the scene taking high definition images of the area.
Investigators say they are turning their attention to eight missing persons files where the subject has been missing for more than 90 days.
It includes Lisa Marie Young who was 21 years old when she went missing June 30th 2002 after being at a local nightclub.
42 year old Jason Burns has been missing since May 2015. He has paranoid schizophrenia and was last seen leaving his assisted living home on Rosstown road not far from where today’s remains were found.
“Certainly that is part of the investigation, we’ll be looking at the missing persons files but as I said it’s too early in the investigation to say anything more” added O’Brien.
