Central Saanich Council approved a motion tonight that could see more lighting put up on a stretch of road where a pedestrian was killed last month.
Councillor Alicia Holman presented the motion asking city staff to recommend and provide costs for improved lighting for Mount Newton Cross Road.
47-year-old mother and grandmother Suzanne Robertson died after being struck by an SUV while walking at night on a stretch of the road near Pat Bay highway last month.
Council also received a petition tonight with roughly 1200 signatures demanding safety improvements including a sidewalk.
One of the steps taken by two local women, Megan Ereiser and Samantha Hunt, spurred to act following the tragedy.
“I just wanted to get the petition going and it snowballed really quickly, everyone wanted to sign it, I didn’t have to knock down doors to get it, ” Ereiser said tonight
“I passed the incident that night and it just affected me,” She added.
The women also set-up roadside bins full of reflective vests for pedestrians to wear while walking on Mount Newton Cross Road, some of them donated by the Central Saanich Fire Department.
