WATCH: YYJ wins award for first-ever event
Victoria has won a ‘Best in the West’ award for YYJ’s first-ever car free day.
The huge event was put on by the Downtown Victoria Business Association.
More than 20,000 people came out last June for the inaugural event.
Six blocks of Douglas Street right in the downtown core were shutdown to vehicle traffic.
Hundreds of vendors set up along the route and people filled the streets to take part.
The event even had a half pipe and 7,000 square feet of grass was even put down on part of the road.
Victoria beat out special events from other parts of B.C., Alberta, and Manitoba for the award.
Victoria’s second-annual car-free day will be held June 19th and it will expand to nine blocks.
