Chris Markevich credits his For two Smart Car for saving his life.
Considering his Fortwo Smart Car hit a huge 900 pound Elk at highway speeds, it is in pretty good shape and Chris Markevich credits it with saving his life last Thursday night.
“And you know one person (at the scene) said Are you ok? and I said I think so, I’m still standing” Markevich told CHEK News.
He had just turned on to Highway 19, in the southbound lanes as he was headed to Comox at about 10:45pm when about half a kilometre down the highway a huge elk suddenly appeared on the road right in front of him.
“I saw a car on the other side so I had to turn my high beams off so he could pass and as he was coming past I was just about to turn my high beams on again and then the elk appeared and boom” he said.
He added there was no time or space to avoid the large animal.
“It appeared so quickly I had no time to react, no time to brake, no time to you know even gasp, you know it was just a flash and then I hit it” said Markevich.
And from there the car rolled and rolled with Chris conscious and alert the entire time.
“I knew that I was spinning out of control because I kind of lurched to the side and I could hear the wind howling through the windshield because I knew it had been impacted and the next thing I knew I just started rolling over and over again probably at least four or five times if not more I can’t even count at this point” he said.
But he walked away from it and was taken to hospital with only minor injuries.
Those who came to tow his vehicle say they had never seen anything like it before.
“It’s a Smart Car and you don’t see a lot of Smart Cars hitting elks and you know considering the state it’s in and how it actually stood up to a 900 pound animal is quite remarkable when you think about it” said Nelson Christensen of Coastline Towing.
“The paramedics and the doctors and the nurses all told me if it was a larger car like a regular sedan or coupe or anything like that the elk would have likely been hit at the knees and would have propelled into the windshield head first and would have impaled me and I wouldn’t be here” said Markevich.
He says his friends once made fun of him for having a Smart Car but Chris feel like the Smart and lucky one now.
