City crews rush to stop water gushing from a broken water main on Terminal Ave.
It was an unusually wet Wednesday in downtown Nanaimo after a water main break.
Terminal Avenue just north of Commercial was closed at about 9:45 this morning.
Crews had the water turned off in about 20 minutes.
Two businesses were affected and the road sustained significant damage.
John Elliot, the City of Nanaimo Utilities Manager, says about 580-thousand litres of water were lost,
“it came through the main here so the crews are currently excavating down to the main to repair the main and then city paving will be in and repair the road damage and repave the road.”
City crews don’t know exactly what caused the main to break..
They hope to have Terminal Avenue reopened by midnight Wednesday.
The water main, built in 1947 was scheduled to be replaced in 2020.
