WATCH: Serious crash sends two people to hospital and closes Highway 19-A north of Courtenay for several hours
Debris was scattered across the highway after three vehicles collided just south of Black Creek at about 10:30 Wednesday morning.
Investigators say speed and impairment may have been factors in the Black Creek crash that saw a blue car get rear-ended by a black one that finally stopped 200 metres farther south when it went off the road and hit some trees.
“One vehicle which is a black sedan apparently came up at the rear of the pack possible at a fairly high rate of speed, impacted the blue sedan to lose control and spin hitting the guard rail and then stopping where you see it now. The black sedan then carried on for several hundred metres down the road before it went off the road and into some bushes,” says Constable Dave Darmuth.
Police said considering the damage, it’s amazing the two people taken to hospital suffered only minor injuries.
The highway was closed for three and a half hours though as officers investigated.
All three vehicles were headed south at the time of the crash.
