Building a stage in front of the B.C. Legislature and painting the long royal walkway, Victoria is getting ready to lay out the red carpet for Will and Kate.
“This is one of the most significant events we’ve ever hosted,” says legislature deputy clerk Kate Ryan-Lloyd. “We’re so happy to be the venue for the official welcome to Canada.”
Victoria’s majestic Parliament Buildings will be the backdrop for Saturday’s welcome ceremony, which is the best chance for the public to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Victoria.
“The lawns can hold 10,000 people but we have a lot of equipment laid out so the maximum number will be slightly less than that,” Ryan-Lloyd says. “We’re going to do our best to accommodate everybody as best we can.”
The Royals are scheduled to arrive in the Inner Harbour just after 5pm Saturday, by the cenotaph, where they’ll lay a wreath and visit veterans.
The Duke and Duchess will then make their way along a red carpet laid across the lawn towards a stage in front of the legislature steps.
Barricades on either side will let the crowd get very close to the Duke and Duchess and anywhere on the lawn that’s not barricaded people will be able to line up to try and see them.
“Once arriving at the main stage they’ll be full military honours — a guard of honour, an inspection, a 21-gun salute — followed by remarks by the dignitaries, including his Royal Highness,” Ryan-Lloyd says.
Police practice royal motorcade route in Greater Victoria
Police are practicing for the motorcade, which will bring the royal couple downtown and to Government House.
For security reasons, the specific route isn’t being revealed but spectators will be able to see it come down the Pat Bay Highway.
People are also expected to gather outside Government House for a glimpse of the royals as the motorcade enters and leaves but the Rockland property will be closed to the pubic for the entire Canadian visit from September 24 to October 1st.
As for the legislature ceremony, which is the best chance for the public to see the royal couple in Victoria, anyone hoping to get a prime position along the red carpet is advised to arrive early — very early.
