The province’s police watchdog and the coroners service are investigating the death of an 18-year old Port Alberni woman after she was taken into custody by the RCMP.
Jocelyn George was put in to a cell at the RCMP detachment in Port Alberni last Thursday.
Friday morning she was found in need of medical attention and taken to Westcoast General Hospital.
George was then airlifted to Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria where she died Friday evening.
No further details were released.
The Independent Investigations Office is conducting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The initial investigation is to see if there is any connection between police action or inaction and the death of the youth.
Investigators will be interviewing officers, interviewing any witnesses and reviewing any video footage which may be available.
There will be a funeral service for Jocelyn George Wednesday morning in Port Alberni.
