Multi-million dollar upgrades are under way to improve one of the largest BC Hydro sub-stations in the province and reduce the number of power outages on southern Vancouver Island.
Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett toured the Horsey substation in Victoria today where there more than 60 million dollars in upgrades are underway.
The substation serves 75-thousand customers and the aging equipment desperately needs replacing.
BC Hydro says the project will improve reliability in the system and will allow for seismic upgrades at the site.
The Horsey equipment replacement project is being done along with an expansion at the George Tripp substation in Saanich, with the total project costing 90 million dollars.
The new equipment is expected to meet growing demand on the system and will last about 50 years.
